I will be graduating in Spring 2021 with a major in English and minor in Psychology, and I hope to continue my education in Psychology after I graduate from Rowan. Before attending Rowan University, I received my Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, NJ. Aside from writing and reading, I love finding inspiration in music, watching television and movies, and spending time with my two dogs at home. If I am not at home reading or writing, I am usually playing guitar, writing music, or attending a concert.
Some of my favorite classes that I have taken in the past include Race in American Literature and Pop Culture, Ethnic Writers in America, and many of my psychology classes. In these classes I was able to explore topics that I am passionate about, and I learned about concepts that have helped me grow in my academic career and helped me expand my prior knowledge on important social issues. I was inspired to focus on this topic of minority communities within Glassboro because over the course of my education I have learned that when stories within a community are hard to find, it does not mean that they are nonexistent. My goal when working on this project was to bring light to the difficulties and history of the African American population in this area over time, specifically the struggles to get an equal education. I especially find it interesting to look at how these geographic elements of exclusion psychologically affect the people who experience prejudice. The connection between psychology, geography, and history is very clear when studying the community of Elsmere.
