The Stories We Find: An Introduction
“Thou art more than a plan; thou art more than cold stone;
Thou are Spirit, and Beauty, and Light.
And the standards we raise in the years ‘neath thy dome,
Are the standards for which we shall fight.” (MTCS 32) - Ada P. Schaible
It is easy to look toward the shiny things, the things that naturally catch our eye while passing by. We like to look for the new because it shows us where we are going. The engineering building that’s neon lights glow bright each night, the air-conditioned Whitney center with keycard access where I sit writing this essay, and the (countless) emails that boast of plans to remodel the student center - this is our future becoming a part of our present. But what about our past? Has it faded away? Or, has it been here along, tucked away in time capsules and theaters, ghosts and growth, marble and memories? I’d like to think so. There is one building on our campus that has seen it all. Despite the dynamic changes over the years, this building has transformed itself into a repository of hidden stories and histories. Bunce Hall, while no longer the literal center of our University, is the center of our history, encasing nearly 100 years of time. I will never know all the stories, but I know the stories I have found, and through these new stories, I have found my own story's place among them in the cold stone walls.
