Jason Conviser Imagined Glassboro Mural Project

Location of this Mural

Although the mural is not located at the site of interest - the Hollybush Mansion - it is done so for good reason. By locating the mural at the “Historic Glassboro” Water Tower, it is viewable throughout many points in and around downtown Glassboro. It would also be viewable by the students of Rowan University that dorm at Holly Pointe Commons or the Edgewood Apartments. In addition to this, it is viewable from Route 322, Carpenter Street, and North Main Street. These three roads connect all throughout major parts of Glassboro, such as Glassboro High School, downtown Glassboro, and even the highway. By doing so, the meaning of the mural is radiated throughout the town, hopefully being taken with those that drive by to pass on the message.

Most importantly, the water tower meets in a triangulation of points between itself, Hollybush Mansion, and Glassboro High School, both of which played a role in the Glassboro Summit and properly commemorating the events that occurred for future generations of Glassboro to remember. Metaphorically, this demonstrates what the mural is meant to show in and of itself, the bringing together of all people in Glassboro and across the nation to achieve a goal of peace. In addition to this, the water tower is arguably one of the tallest points in the immediate area of the high school and Hollybush. Because of this, it is not only visible across multiple points in the town, but it also demonstrates the importance of the ideas it presents. For this reason, the people of Glassboro are located at the top of the mural. This shows that at the end of the day members of the town are the most important part of Glassboro, as they are the ones that have the ability to pass on the message of acceptance and support, while also being the ones to demonstrate this message in everyday life.

While the cost of creating this mural is not known and there is no good way to give an estimate of what it would be, there are other options for the location if it would not work. As previously mentioned, the point of the mural is to spread a message of acceptance and togetherness, and therefore, the mural could be replicated in other parts of town, possibly at the Hollybush Mansion or the high school as well. Although this would lose its importance in the sense of being visible for many people across the town, it could even be replicated at multiple buildings, further spreading the idea it is meant to demonstrate, thus successfully achieving the main goal of the mural.
