The Paper Money of the Glass House

What's in a Name?

Company money produced by the glassworks went by many different names. Scrip currency did not actually become a common term until the Depression in the 1930s.  Shin Plaster came from "chein piastre" meaning dog-eared money. Presumably, workers in the town also referred to it generically as just money. Glassworks company money went through several different names, each with slightly different implications, but all referring to the same thing.

Similarly, Rowan's company money is also known by several names. It is officially known as Rowan Bucks and Dining Dollars. The name was changed from Boro Bucks to Rowan Bucks at the beginning of the 2016 academic year. This name change is interesting, particularly for two reasons. The first is that the term Boro Bucks is still commonly in use. Many students who attended the University prior to the name change still use the term Boro Bucks because that is what they were used to and the alliteration rolls of the tongue more readily than "Rowan Bucks". Because of their influence, students who were matriculated after the name change, still use this term even though it was never the official name that they were told. This is a fascinating exhibit of how the actions of those around us can have a greater influence on us than official rules or guidelines that are in place.

The second is the name change itself. It was changed from Boro Bucks - "Boro" being short for Glassboro - to Rowan Bucks - referring to the University. The places where this money is accepted has not changed. Rowan Bucks are still accepted within Glassboro, not just on Rowan's campus. It is as if they are trying to change the focus from the town to the University. In recent years, Rowan has greatly expanded and this has led to some people feeling like Rowan is taking over the town. This name change could be used as supporting evidence for this sentiment. However, according to Rowan's campus newspaper, The Whit, it was not to impose itself on the community, but rather to make Rowan Bucks more relevant to all students as Rowan has recently acquired other campuses outside of Glassboro. However, it is unclear as to whether Rowan money is accepted at any campus other than Glassboro.
