Glassboro's Auditorium: An Atypical and Complicated Center for Town Activities

Why Don't Spaces of this Nature Exist Anymore?

I would say the reason for a place like the Auditorium ceasing to exist not only in Glassboro, but in general is the growth of economy and population. People naturally began spreading out instead of staying clustered within one locale; they didn’t have to rely on just their town anymore. When roads and cars started to become popular, people had the mobility to get where they needed or wanted to go. Thus, there was no need to stay in the same place to go shopping, bowling, or host a movie. You typically don’t see one business owning a bowling alley, ballroom, and skating rink. Even if multiple businesses or people owned the recreational sites within the Auditorium, it was unique that they existed under the same roof, which something somewhat foreign to and atypical for us today. Businesses likely began splitting off and existing in their own spaces since people had access to them, which they could profit off of.

The same idea still applies today. We have even more modern cars and road systems, and I don’t think people mind driving (at least in this area due to proximity) to the places that host the activities the Auditorium did. I think something that does exist still that may be most comparable to the building is perhaps a Y.M.C.A., which itself is not as popular as it was in the past.
