While in Germany, the Stangers were attracted by advertisements looking to recruit glassworkers, to work in the American colonies. In America their profession was in demand and they were offered good compensation. As a result, the Stangers moved to colonies to work for a glassworks in Alloway, NJ. They eventually decided to start their own glassworks, and they purchased cheap land in what later became known as Glassboro. In the early years of Glassboro, the Stanger family pursued as much land that they could get for the lowest price. The land at this location was cheap. It was also an ideal location do to easy access to timber, which was needed to heat the furnaces.
