The Lived Experience at Rowan University - Past and Present

The History of the Glassboro Normal School

What is today Rowan University had rather humble, historical beginnings. Largely a result of the Industrial Revolution, Southern New Jersey's population had increased rapidly by the start of the 20th-century. Free public education was mandated by the state in 1896, and with this boom in births, there was a greater need for properly-trained elementary school teachers (Donahue, 2016). However, there was a striking lack of schools to provide teachers with the necessary education and resources. In response to this, it was decided that a new normal school were to open

Looking back, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into, as I first encountered Rowan University, the city of Glassboro, and Southern New Jersey as a whole. However, long before my first day of class, my orientation, my commitment date, and my first tour, Rowan University stood as a place of meaning in the minds of many other students before me.
