The Role of the Library

A Brief Overview of Libraries

The role of a library has been changing since a new age of technology has begun. Where libraries used to be a quiet place to find information that you couldn't otherwise find, in today's society a lot of the same information can be found at the click of a button at home or on the go.  When I was a young child, going to the library was something that I did frequently. At my elementary school, once a week we would walk to the school library and spend an hour reading and checking out books that we could keep until the next week. This is what ignited my love for reading, and what prompted my interest in researching libraries in and around the Glassboro area. Prior to this research, there are a lot of services that libraries offer that I didn’t even know existed. Though libraries are known for being a source for books, they offer many other services, most all for free. Many libraries are actually located in a town center, such as the one in Ocean City, New Jersey that I frequent. This center has many amenities besides the library, such as a gym as well as a small museum. This research projects invites readers to understand the history of Glassboro libraries as well as to look at libraries in possibly a different way than they previously had.
