Glassboro Redevelopment: Bridging Town and Gown

About the Cultural Geographer

My name is Jonathan Dolan, I am a Communication Studies major with a Sociology minor. I am from Dumont, New Jersey and this is my Senior year here at Rowan University. I've been a member of the Bantivoglio Honors Concentration since I came to Rowan in August of 2016. At Rowan, I got involved in Greek life and joined the fraternity Phi Kappa Sigma. Since then, I have spent nearly 20 hours a semester participating in volunteer programs within the Glassboro community. It was through the program "Back to the Boro" where I first heard concerns about the University's impact on the wider Glassboro community. After some research, I began to fully understand the pros and cons of the massive redevelopment project. When I arrived in August 2016, Rowan Boulevard was fairly new and the Town Square was not completed yet. I witnessed the final stages as well as the finished project, but I realized other students did not understand what was truly taking place. This project gave me the opportunity to showcase my learning and explain how place can change both physically and culturally, and how one place can hold multiple meanings.
