Glassboro Redevelopment: Bridging Town and Gown

Proposed Mural

Use the audio clip above to illustrate the Town Square in Glassboro today. Last decade, developers began funneling nearly half a billion dollars into the Glassboro Redevelopment Project, which bridges the gap between students and "old-timers" to create one flourishing and integrated place. Both physically and culturally, this area has undergone a complete overhaul in a historically short amount of time.

This mural, depicting the transformation of downtown Glassboro, is my way of preserving history, highlighting the positives, and leaving the negatives in the past. It can help those struggling to adjust to the new atmosphere, while reminding those who embraced the change just how beneficial it has been. On the top are three photographs from Glassboro in 2008. It shows run down business, boarded up windows, and quiet side streets. Directly below are photographs of the same area 11 years later in 2019. The corner of Main and High Street is now a bright and inviting park and abandon properties were replaced with luxury apartments and retail shops. Rowan Boulevard is now connected to Main Street and one side street was completely removed and remodeled into a busy sidewalk in the Town Square. In the middle, the words "Glassboro Redevelopment: Bridging the Gap" are placed above a bridge. This bridge represents the cultural and physical improvements Glassboro has made to bring their two communities together. The physical landscape has changed into that of an interconnected and inviting downtown, and culturally the communities are growing.

Nearly every Rowan student today does not know what Glassboro was like last decade. So let’s make this next decade one of positive change, celebration and integration.
