Imagined Glassboro Mural Proposal: Changes in Glassboro High School Through History: by Jack Bell

Reflection

I started on my research by searching for information online about all the schools in general that were located in Glassboro.  Initially, I decided to work with both Glassboro High School and Glassboro Intermediate School and find their connections in history. In October, I interviewed Glassboro experts Linda Cossaboone and Marie Lockwood and learned about their experiences as students in Glassboro High School and they also shared information they knew about the schools in Glassboro in the past and in the present. What stood out to me was the school spirit of the High School and the fact that there was a segregated school in Glassboro called the Elsmere School. After the interviews, I looked more into the Elsmere School by taking a look at Robert Tucker's The History of Elsmere and listening to his interviews where he talks about schools in Glassboro. In the end, I decided to dive deep into Glassboro High School and look more into the three different locations where it stood in history.

In order to help me see changes specifically with the culture of students in Glassboro High School, I looked and studied the high school yearbooks from 1930 to 1981. I was able to find the yearbooks online and at the Glassboro Public Library. Also, I did field work on the site of where the mural would be located by taking notes on what was around the mural site and how it felt to be there.

Overall, this project to helped me to see this place in a way I would have never seen otherwise and it allowed me to learn about the history of high school through exploring its three different locations in history. I would like to thank Michael Benson from the Digital Scholarship Center at the Campbell Library for helping me start the design of the mural and with research for my project. I would also like to thank Dr. Jennifer Kitson for helping me in moving forward with my project and providing me with feedback.
