• 1 2019-05-07T17:50:22+00:00 History of Savitz Library 10 image_header 2019-05-13T14:10:28+00:00 Savitz Library officially opened in 1963 at what was then known as Glassboro State College. It cost the university approximately $663,000 to construct, which is about $5,500,000 today. This library was built to accommodate for the growing student population, as the previous library that was on this campus proved to be too small. This library flowed over three floors and provided many new services for the students to utilize. It was home to The Stewart Collection, which was at the time the only comprehensive research collection of New Jersey history to be found in this state. Savitz was also a depository library for government publications.
  This means that the library provides free access to selected titles from over 20,000 new publications issued each year by the Federal Government. Savitz also received selected New Jersey state publications, and the Government Publication collection housed U.S Supreme and District Court Cases as well as New Jersey Supreme and Superior court cases. The library was utilized by students, faculty, researchers, geographers, and historians. Students and faculty had access to online databases at this time, however, they cost a fee. The fee was actually quite steep for the time, $10.00 for the first database searched and an extra $5 for each additional searched. This seems like a lot to pay for a simple database search, because this is something that we can do for free today at home, on our phones, or on any local computer.
